Koi Pond Maintenance

Specialized Service
Koi pond filters must be cleaned. Depending on size and fish population, filters must be cleaned two to three times a year for optimum fish health.

The principle cause of Koi fish death are biological filters that have ceased to remove ammonia from the water. More so than disease. More so than predators.

As Koi fish grow to a foot or more in length, their demand on filter performance is quadrupled.

A filter that is not properly cleaned may fail to function for several weeks.

“Pond cleaning” is a service above and beyond filter cleaning. It is a delicate process that if not properly done can result in fish dying from shock.

Both filter cleaning and pond cleaning require specialized equipment. More important, the work requires special knowledge. That knowledge can only come from years of direct experience.

Dai Ichi Filter Cleaning
Dai Ichi services only the traditional Japanese gravel filter. That style filter allows Dai Ichi to guarantee its work.

Dai Ichi, depending on the set up, guarantees optimum filter operation for six months. Cleaning is generally performed in the Spring and in the Fall.

Dai Ichi Pond Cleaning
Pond cleaning is separate from filter cleaning. In pond cleaning, the fish have to be removed from the pond. Care has to be taken so that fish do not go into shock and die.

As a rule, pond cleaning needs to be done every two or three years. It is generally done when the filter is to be cleaned. This is a separate service with an additional charge.

The 25 Cent Test for Water Clarity
A properly operating biological filter should produce clear water. Dai Ichi defines clear water as follows: Drop a quarter in your pond. If you can see the quarter on the floor of the pond, your water is clear.

Service Area Limits
Because Dai Ichi must be able to respond to calls from its Pond Maintenance clientele, it limits maintenance to its service area. Service Area is explained on the About Dai Ichi page.
